Individualized Home Support (IHS)

Live Independently in Your Own Home With the Right Support

Everyone deserves the opportunity to live in a place they call home. Our Individual Home Support (IHS) program helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities do exactly that. Through the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) waiver program, we provide personalized, goal-oriented support that meets you where you are and helps you build toward greater independence. Since 2004, Beta Care Services CT has been helping Connecticut residents thrive in their own homes and communities. Your home, your life, your way—with the support you need to succeed.

  • Bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Medication reminders
  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Budgeting and money management
  • Light housekeeping

This program empowers individuals to live as independently as possible in a safe, structured, and supportive home environment, while also helping them build life skills, maintain routines, and engage with their communities.

Group IHS Options

  • Individual IHS – One-on-one support from a dedicated staff member.
  • Group IHS (Group 2) – One staff member provides care for two individuals with similar routines and compatible support needs, encouraging peer interaction and collaboration.
  • Group IHS (Group 3) – One staff member supports three individuals, promoting shared activities, routine coordination, and efficient service delivery, while maintaining individualized attention.

These flexible models allow us to deliver high-quality care while promoting social connection, autonomy, and cost-effectiveness for families and support teams.

You Stay in Control of Your Own Life

The IHS program is built around you. Your preferences matter. Your goals drive the plan. Your choices are respected every single day. Unlike institutional settings where routines are dictated by staff schedules, Individual Home Support puts you at the center. You decide what time you want to wake up, what meals you want to eat, and how you want to spend your time. Our role is to support your decisions, not make them for you. This person-centered approach helps you develop confidence and skills while maintaining the dignity and autonomy you deserve.

Build Real Skills That Last a Lifetime

Individual Home Support isn't just about helping you get through the day—it's about helping you become more capable over time. Our staff works with you on practical skills like cooking, cleaning, managing money, and organizing your schedule. These aren't just tasks we do for you; they're skills we help you develop. Progress might look different for everyone, and that's perfectly fine. What matters is that you're moving forward at your own pace, gaining abilities that make your life richer and more independent. Small steps today lead to big changes over time.

Stay Connected to Your Community

Living independently doesn't mean living in isolation. Our IHS program helps you engage with the world around you—whether that means participating in community activities, maintaining relationships with friends and family, or exploring new interests. We help you get where you want to go and do what matters to you. Social connection is essential to wellbeing, and our support extends beyond your front door. You're not just living in your community; you're becoming an active part of it.

Common Questions About Individual Home Support

  • Who is eligible for Individual Home Support services?

IHS is available to individuals who have a waiver through the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS). You must be deemed eligible for DDS services and enrolled in an appropriate waiver program such as the Comprehensive Supports or Individual and Family Supports waiver.

  • What's the difference between Individual IHS and Group IHS?

Individual IHS provides one-on-one support with a dedicated staff member. Group IHS (available in groups of 2 or 3) allows one staff member to support multiple individuals with compatible needs, encouraging peer interaction while keeping costs manageable for families.

  • Can IHS help me live on my own for the first time?

Absolutely. Many people use IHS as a stepping stone toward greater independence. We'll work with you to develop the skills you need to manage daily life, from cooking and cleaning to budgeting and personal care, at whatever pace works for you.

  • How are IHS services personalized to each individual?

Everything starts with your person-centered plan. We look at your goals, preferences, strengths, and support needs to create a customized approach that fits your life. Services evolve as your needs and goals change over time.

  • Where can IHS services be provided?

IHS can be provided in your own home, in your family's home, or in the community. The program is designed to support you wherever you live and help you engage with the broader community around you.

  • How do I get started with Individual Home Support?

Start by talking to your DDS case manager about your interest in IHS. They can help determine eligibility and work with you to include IHS in your Individual Plan. Beta Care Services CT can coordinate with your case manager to begin services once approved.

  • What qualifications do your IHS staff members have?

Our staff complete required training through DDS, including the College of Direct Support curriculum. They demonstrate competence in providing safe, person-centered support and are carefully matched to individuals based on needs and compatibility.

  • Who is eligible for Individualized Day Support services?

IDS is available to individuals enrolled in a Connecticut DDS waiver program, including the Comprehensive Supports, Individual and Family Supports, or Employment and Day Supports waivers. Your DDS case manager can help determine whether IDS is appropriate for your Individual Plan.

  • Where do IDS activities take place?

IDS is a community-based service. Activities happen throughout your local area—at parks, libraries, stores, volunteer sites, recreational facilities, and other real-world community settings, not in a facility or center.

  • How is IDS different from Group Day programs?

Group Day programs typically involve structured activities with multiple participants in a facility setting. IDS is highly individualized and takes place in the community, with programming designed specifically around your personal interests, goals, and preferences.

  • Can IDS help prepare someone for employment?

Yes. IDS often includes vocational exploration and skill-building activities that can serve as a foundation for future employment. For individuals interested in working, IDS can be a stepping stone toward supported employment services.

  • How many hours of IDS can someone receive?

The number of hours depends on your Level of Need assessment and your Individual Plan. Your case manager works with you to determine appropriate service levels based on your goals and allocated funding.

  • Can IDS be combined with other services?

Absolutely. Many individuals combine IDS with other waiver services such as Individual Home Support, Respite, or Companion Services. Your support team can help you create a comprehensive service package that meets all your needs.

  • How do I get started with Individualized Day Support?

Talk with your DDS case manager about including IDS in your Individual Plan. Once approved, Beta Care Services CT can work with you to design programming that reflects your interests and goals. Call us to learn more about the process.
